The latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct had some disappointing news, as only the male version of Byleth will receive an amiibo, despite the popularity of the female iteration of the character.

Byleth was the last DLC character in the first Fighters Pass for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The player can select between a male and female version of Byleth in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and the same choice was given in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This was notable, as the only other female character in the first Fighters Pass outside of Byleth was Kazooie, though the second Fighters Pass has added more with Alex and Min Min.

Masahiro Sakurai has hosted another Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct, which focused on Steve from Minecraft’s addition to the game. The Direct also included information about upcoming amiibo, including Banjo-Kazooie and Terry. It was also revealed that Byleth is only receiving a single amiibo based on the male version of the character.

It’s not unheard of for Super Smash Bros Ultimate characters to receive multiple amiibo, as was the case with Cloud Strife having amiibo based on his Final Fantasy 7 and Advent Children costumes. As such, it’s disappointing that Byleth hasn’t received the same treatment, especially considering the popularity of both versions of the character. Then again, Hero also didn’t receive additional amiibo based on his other forms, as only the Dragon Quest XI version of the character is represented.

It’s possible that Nintendo is winding down amiibo production and is only making the remaining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate figures to ensure a complete collection, seeing as the previous Super Smash Bros. game was the first title to receive amiibo figures. The response to Byleth’s inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was polarizing, as many fans felt that there were too many Fire Emblem characters in the game already, but both versions of the character deserve representation in amiibo form. It’s possible that a sufficiently loud outcry from the fans could convince Nintendo to make female Byleth figures in the future.

The Banjo-Kazooie, Byleth, and Terry amiibo figures will be released in 2021.
