Prophecy of Kings is the title of the newest expansion for the grand exploration and strategy board game Twilight Imperium Fourth Edition. Fantasy Flight Games recently announced the new expansion, along with detail of the game’s many new rules and game component additions. Prophecy of Kings is available now to pre-order from the FFG online store and from your FLGS.

Prophecy of Kings increases many of the core game’s elements, including raising the max number of players to eight with two new player component colors. Kings also includes seven new factions, forty new system and hyperlane tiles, new individual faction leader cards, new exploration decks, and according to the official press release, “new action cards, agenda cards, objectives, technologies, promissory notes, legendary planets, and more.”

The Kings expansion sets players in-game with the discovery of the lost planet Ixth. An expedition sent to ascertain the status of the planet discovers a tomb-city instead, a prison built to hold the once-domineering Mahact Gene-Sorcerers. Somehow they escaped their prison and are once again set on conquering the system and continuing their reign of galaxian terror.

The seven new factions in Kings bring the total number of playable factions to 24, and further increases the scope of strategy and individual playstyle approaches available. For example, the Mahact Gene-Sorcerers have the Edict ability that allows them to “learn and collect the genetic sequence of their enemies during battle.” With this ability, the Mahact can claim the command token of a faction they defeat and add it to their own fleet pool. That command token then becomes a new leader type, and the Mahact can use the token’s abilities as their own against other players.

The 74 new individual faction leader cards allow faction leaders from the Twilight Imperium Core Set to gain and use a whole set of new abilities. These faction leader cards add three new leader styles each faction (agent, commander, and hero), each with their own dynamic faction effects.

Four new exploration card decks also come with the Kings expansion, representing the cultural, hazardous, industrial, and frontier planets you can now discover and explore throughout the galaxy. Exploration of these planets may turn up new relic fragments, which you can collect and piece together into mighty tools that allow for multiple in-game benefits.
