Relive your ’80s dream-filled video game experiences with Contra The Board Game, the upcoming board game title by Blacklist Games.
In the ’80s, few parents dared enter the bedrooms of teenage boys, fearing for what they would see. Posters of Iron Maiden, Kiss, and Supermodel Cindy Crawford adorned their walls. You would find the flag of Great Britain, ironically hung above the beds of the young citizens of a country that had spurned it two centuries ago. Radio stations played hit songs from artists like Madonna, Prince, David Bowie, and The Cure. Piles of LPs and cassette tapes were stacked high; and if you were lucky enough there was a TV with a Nintendo attached.
It was this the muffled grunts and groans, accompanied by “Nearly there, nearly there…”, that saw more than just eyebrows raised. As you have probably guessed by now, we are of course talking about Contra. The arcade maddening-sideways-scrolling platform shooter had finally come to homes on the Nintendo Entertainment System. It wasn’t long before the prayer to the Konami gods was recited the world over, “Up Up, Down Down, Left Right, Left Right, B, A, Start,” hoping for any advantage it would bring. Those were the days…
It’s no wonder, then, that a game the evokes such stroke memories is set to receive the tabletop treatment in the form of Contra The Board Game. Designed for 1-4 players, Contra is a co-operative board game that sees players take on the role of a soldier of the infamous Contra Corps and fight together to defeat the bad guys. It features fixed decks for each soldier and four hostile environments to fight in. The artwork is not just reminiscent of the Contra series, but the ’80s itself. Plenty of Stallone and Schwarzenegger inspired poses for sure.
Contra The Board Game is slated for a Q1/Q2 2021 release. You can preorder the Day One Edition now for $50 from Blacklist Games now, but don’t expect it anytime soon. With everything that is still going on, dates could easily slip. Regardless, we are looking forward to this game. We just hope there is a “Konami cheat code” card included!
