Those unfamiliar with the direct sequel to Final Fantasy 10 may not know how everything in Yuna’s story works. There is an entirely new job system using dress spheres, Yuna is a bounty hunter, and Spira is her oyster. Though she and the rest of the Gullwings have a dope airship, they still need Chocobos to get around faster on the ground.
That’s where a friendly face from FF 10 comes in: a former soldier by the name of Clasko. He and Calli eventually set up a Chocobo farm in the old monster arena, but only if you trigger events in a specific way. This has plagued many a player since you need a Chocobo to get Paine’s ultimate dress sphere. Here’s a step-by-step guide to catching a Chocobo for Clasko in FF 10-2.
Things To Do Before Catching A Chocobo
Like many of the sidequests in FF 10-2, the setup to the quest is more involved than the quest itself. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it allows the player to feel that they’re a real part of Spira. That’s what Yuna wanted after all, isn’t it?
But the basic rundown of how to set up the quest is this:
- Step #1: Get Clasko onto your airship in Chapter 1. You need to find him at Mushroom Rock then personally invite him onto your airship. Step #2: Talk to the character running the Chocobo mini-game in Chapter 2 while at the Mi’Hen high road. Doing it right should get trigger a cutscene where a fiend is attacking a woman named Calli. Step #3: Save Calli from the Chocobo Eater in Chapter 2. Then, you can invite her and Clasko onto the airship. Step #4: Visit the Calm Lands where Clasko will run off on his own. You just need to meet him at the old monster arena next. Step #5: Talk to Clasko then clear fiends from the monster arena.
Once you’ve gotten to this point in the Clasko questline, you can then pursue catching a Chocobo.
Use Greens To Catch Chocobos in FF 10-2 Battles
As with most Final Fantasy games, greens act as some kind lure for Chocobos. They can be one of a few types and, often, each green type has different traits. This means that they’ll affect Chocobos differently.
After clearing out the leftover fiends from the monster arena, Clasko will give you these greens. YRP (Yuna, Rikku, and Paine) will then need to encounter wild Chocobos in random battles.
Time Matters A Great Deal
Chocobos have various personalities ranging from “Bold” to “Timid”. This trait determines how quickly they’ll run away in battle. All Chocobos will run away at some point during a battle, but you can still catch them easily by doing the following:
- Move the greens to the top of your inventory to use them quickly. Use the Thief dress sphere for added initiative. Have the very first person in the ATB line use the greens.
Kill The Fiends Then Keep Throwing Greens
After using the initial greens to calm the Chocobo into staying, take out the remaining fiends. That frees you to use greens to further endear the bird to you so that you can catch it.
This should also net you the achievement “Tricky Trapper” along with a shiny new Chocobo!
