Final Fantasy used to be one of the biggest names in the gaming industry at one point. While the franchise still has immense pulling power, one can’t deny that the overall impact of the series has lessened somewhat with games becoming more modern and action-oriented, as opposed to the turn-based combat of this legendary JRPG series. However, Square Enix knew just how important the Final Fantasy name is, and took the bold decision of making the latest game a fully-fledged open-world title with real-time combat.
The end result was an admirable title with some interesting concepts that managed to nail some things and missed the mark on others. However, there’s one aspect of the game that received near-universal praise — the main cast.
Noctis, Ignis, Gladio, Prompto are certainly very close friends, and the camaraderie they show in the game proves this. However, there are times when this main cast ends up doing some absolutely strange things that make no sense whatsoever. Keeping this in mind, here are ten things that don’t make sense about the main cast of Final Fantasy XV.
10 All Three Characters Randomly Disappearing For DLC Purposes
During the events of Final Fantasy XV, there are random moments in the game when Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto simply disappear from the party for no rhyme or reason.
This was done to fit in some hamfisted DLC episodes, and while this content was good — for the most part — the manner in which these excursions were introduced should’ve been done in a better way.
9 The Best Moments Of These Characters Not Being Present In The Main Game
One major problem with Final Fantasy XV is the fact that important story moments and engrossing character arcs are hidden behind paywalls, gated content, or entirely new experiences altogether.
Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto might be good characters in themselves, but the DLC episodes and the anime that introduces them turns them into some of the best characters ever introduced in Final Fantasy… but the average player will never get to see that unless they invest enough time in the universe!
8 Gladio’s Random Excursion To Fight Gilgamesh
Out of all the three DLC episodes, Gladio’s is easily the worst. His entire solo quest revolves around him wanting to grow stronger by tackling a challenge on his own — something that he could’ve done without being so overly dramatic about it.
His DLC episode does nothing to further his character, and the same thing can be said about…
7 Gladio’s Ridiculous Attire
People constantly harp about how female characters are sometimes relegated into the fanservice role… but this isn’t a gendered thing at all. Gladio’s outfit is the perfect proof of it.
The fact that he’s wearing a leather jacket and nothing else regardless of the weather shows just how much Square Enix actually care about realistic clothing.
6 Prompto’s Unhealthy Obsession Over Cindy
Of course, one can’t mention the word ‘fanservice’ in Final Fantasy XV without mentioning the enigma that is Cindy. This mechanic has absolutely no personality whatsoever, with her looks being the only reason why she gets so much screen time in the game.
It seems that this fanservice did work on one person — Prompto. This talkative gunslinger can’t stop but hype up Cindy every single time she asks for any request, which is certainly quite weird.
5 Ignis’ Sacrifice Is Completely Ignored By Noctis
One of the best party members in Final Fantasy history, Ignis is perhaps the only person in the group that actually tries to keep Noctis stable as much as possible.
However, when he goes blind post the events of Altissia, Noctis doesn’t even bother to check up on his close friend and ask him how that came to be. It’s absolutely horrible on Noctis’ end to do this, but we shouldn’t really be surprised since…
4 Noctis Is A Weird And Whiny Character In General
While a major reason for this is due to the subpar English voice acting, one can’t deny the fact that Noctis just feels like a bunch of haphazard lines that were blurted out in the edgiest manner possible and plastered onto the character.
Whenever Noctis talks, one can never understand whether he’s angry, sad, bemused, or being funny. Whatever he’s trying to be, the end result always sounds sarcastic… even when he doesn’t mean to be like that.
3 The Lack Of Activity While Noctis Was AWOL
After interacting with the Crystal, Noctis is pulled into the object and learns about his place in the world, before going into hibernation for ten years. After emerging from the Crystal, Noctis sees that the entire world has fallen into ruin as a result of the Starscourge.
The real question here is — why did Ignis, Gladiolus, and Prompto allow Ardyn to go forth with his plan without any interruptions? It just sounded like the party was unable to function without Noctis, and were just waiting for a miracle to happen.
2 Noctis’ Friends Letting Him Walk Away To His Doom
As if Noctis’ friends were useless enough as is, they also just stood by as their best friend walked into the final confrontation with Ardyn in a battle that would surely lead to his demise.
Why did none of his friends do anything to stop this from happening? After all, the entire message surrounding most Final Fantasy games is to fight against fate and change the tide of one’s destiny!
And yet, in this game, it seems that the chains binding Noctis to his fate were far too tight for anyone to break.
1 All Three Characters Being A Waste In Battle Without The Player’s Input
Of course, given the fact that the supporting members are completely useless without the player’s input in battle, it’s not really a surprise that Noctis decided to abandon them and finish the job on his own.
Without using ally techs, link strikes, and the like, the AI-controlled party members barely dish out any damage, leaving Noctis to do most of the heavy lifting.
