The internet has been abuzz with fans and newcomers alike taking on Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake, a from-the-ground-up reimagining of the first section from the 1997 PlayStation classic in a long-running series of fantasy JRPGs. Though the new game has changed some major things about the original, one thing it stays true to is protagonist Cloud Strife’s iconic Buster Sword. The developers even go so far as to poke fun at how huge it is in-game.
In the lead-up to the release of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, a Japanese YouTube channel called Crafty Transformer released a video showing how fans of the game could create their own Buster Sword made entirely out of cardboard. The three-minute video shows how to make the sword using DIY templates available through a Google Drive folder in its description, and naturally spends a good amount of time out in nature flaunting its built-in capability to be spun around.
The project is undoubtedly impressive, and fits in well with a bevy of other cardboard DIY creations posted to the channel since it was created in 2017, including iconic objects from anime like a Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Disk and weapons from various other video game franchises like Monster Hunter. However some of the appeal is lost in translation, as text instructions are given through subtitles on the video that currently can only be read in Japanese.
Cloud’s Buster Sword is not the only object from Final Fantasy 7 that has been made out of cardboard since the game’s remake was released earlier this month. The fast food chain Arby’s recreated the protagonist’s motorcycle out of cardboard right around the remake’s launch. Though it was a smaller-scale model using sandwich boxes rather than anything big enough to use like a real vehicle.
While Cloud actually has six weapons to choose from in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, none are anywhere near as iconic as the Buster Sword. Not only is it a symbol of Final Fantasy 7 as a whole, but it has been brought over to other Square Enix projects like Kingdom Hearts and makes an appearance as Cloud’s weapon in both Super Smash Bros. 4 and Ultimate.
The game’s remake may have done away with the original’s turn-based combat system, but if anything the newer realtime, high-octane fighting has made Cloud’s giant weapon that much cooler. Thanks to Crafty Transformer, now fans and cosplayers can have a Buster Sword for themselves.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now for PS4.
