Fans have been uncertain about the names of future entries in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, but one theory suggests a naming convention that will alter the title in upcoming installments in a way that makes sense.
There were concerns among fans that Square Enix was misleading gamers in the run-up to the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake. The name suggests that the game is a full remake of Final Fantasy VII from the ’90s when it was actually the first entry in a longer series and only covers one section of the original game. It turned out the name choice had a purpose, as the characters break free from the original story at the end of Final Fantasy VII Remake. This means that only the first game is actually a remake, while the rest of the entries will be their own entities.
It’s unlikely that Square Enix will continue the Final Fantasy VII Remake naming scheme, seeing as it’s not actually remaking the original game anymore. One theory posited by Twitter user kuraine is that future entries will use words that begin with “RE” that tie into the story, such as “Rebirth” or “Reunion.”
“Reunion” seems like a smart choice for the name of a future entry in the series. The Reunion is the name given to the event where people injected with Jenova cells all come together. This is due to the alien nature of Jenova’s cells allowing them to be connected and controlled from a distance, which is something that Sephiroth uses to his advantage in order to mess with Cloud.
No one knows when the next game in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series will be released, though the developers have suggested that the wait will be a lot shorter than the one for the first game. Once the second game is released, we should have an idea of the naming convention for the series going forward.
