Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered may not be a high-budget reimagining like Final Fantasy 7 Remake is, but fans of the 2003 spin-off are likely still excited regardless to re-experience the adventure.

One major caveat is the lack of the game’s local co-op, a feature that arguably helped define the game. Many have expressed confusion over Square Enix’s decision to remove it, especially since it’d be much easier to do on modern systems, as the original GameCube title required players to also own individual GameBoy Advances and link cables.

While it’s a shame it has been removed, Crystal Chronicles Remastered will be receiving all-new features, including new boss fights, extra dungeons, and, possibly most surprising of all, voice acting.

This has been revealed via a YouTube video posted by Japanese outlet Famitsu. While primarily showing off gameplay, including a couple of boss fights and the returning Moogle Paint feature, voiced dialogue can be heard during cutscenes and battles. Aside from the usual verbal grunts and battle noises, some cutscenes will have full voice-acting from the NPCs. This also applies to Crystal Chronicles regular Stiltzkin, making this the first time the character has had a voice, and Party members will even yell attacks in unison when fusing magic.

The voice acting is entirely in Japanese, though, and there’s no word on whether the game will receive English voices or only offer Japanese voices with English subtitles.

As a reminder, a free-to-play version of the game will also be made available and this one will feature a co-op option, allowing players to also team up with those that own the full game. And since it supports cross-play, friends who wish to play together won’t all need to own the same platform.

Square Enix certainly has its work cut out for them at the moment, between the likes of its Avengers game, which is due out in a few months, the second part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, and its new PlayStation 5 IP Project Athia.

There’s still very little know about that last one, which only got a brief trailer at the PS5 reveal event, though Square Enix has since confirmed that it will also release on PC and will be an open-world game.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered will release for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 on August 27th.
