The upcoming remake of Final Fantasy VII has been in development for a long time, and the more we find out about it, the more it becomes clear that the time was spent adding more to the game and the story than was found in the original. Case in point: there’s a whole slew of characters that will play a role in the 2020 remake who don’t exist in the 1997 original.
The main core of the game’s original story, which follows Cloud and his companions as they battle against Shinra, Sephiroth and Jenova, will most likely stay substantially the same. However, the new characters, such as Andrea Rhodea, the owner of the Honeybee Inn, and Rosche, a renegade member of SOLDIER, will likely provide new twists and reveal new facets of the well-known tale.
Most of the characters who have been revealed so far are part of Wall Market, the slums that makes up a large chunk of the beginning of the first game. For instance, the character Madam M is a character who chooses which women (or, in the case of Cloud, cross-dressers) get to pay a visit to crime lord Don Corneo.
There’s also the character of Leslie Kyle, a thug who works for Don Corneo and helps him maintain control over the Wall Market.
In fact, Rosche is the only new character that we know of so far whose identity isn’t in some way tied to the Wall Market crime lord. Rather, Rosche is a character who seems to specifically have it out for Cloud, though the exact reason for his grudge against the protagonist has not been made entirely clear as of yet.
It’s unlikely that these are the only new characters that Square Enix has added to the game, otherwise all the new content would be very heavily front-loaded into the plot. Rather, the fact that there are so many new faces for players to meet at the very beginning of the game implies that the entire game will have a similarly-expanded cast and crew.
