A truly beautiful virtual funeral march was held within Final Fantasy XIV yesterday for a player who passed away due to COVID-19.

Thousands of FFXIV players from all over the world marched in solidarity in-game for their fallen comrade. It’s a gathering that simply wouldn’t be possible in real life at the moment, but one that could still happen thanks to the incredibly powerful platform of online gaming.

Images and videos of the memorial march have been making the rounds throughout social media, and people everywhere are expressing their awe over the breathtaking support and love that the gaming community can express for fellow players. Even towards those who they do not know personally, outside of the games they play.

A similar effort was made 6 years ago when another FFXIV player - Codex Vahlda - passed away from renal failure. Again, fellow players virtually banded together and held a number of memorials and vigils to honour him, including a spectacular light show that spells out the name “Codex.”

There is an unbelievable sense of connectedness that comes with gaming together - whether it’s with a group of friends or total strangers - that people can and should tap into more than ever during these times of isolation.
