While this won’t bring an immediate end to the problem, it’s certainly a necessary first step. Dota 2 has been plagued by the Custom Games problem for far too long, and the developers are finally doing something about it.
For many fans, Dota 2 is the very last word in MOBAs. Another huge feather in Valve’s cap, the game blossomed from its humble origins as a Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos mod (the original Defense of the Ancients) to become a genre powerhouse. At the same time, though, this means it suffers from a lot of the issues that the biggest MOBAs do.
First and foremost, of course, the genre is all about competition. Being heavily based around team combat, Dota 2 is taken super seriously and things can get… well, heated is one way to describe it. As such, players have been known to take to unscrupulous methods to earn themselves an advantage. Just look at what’s happened to custom games.
As Game Life reports, the fact that busier games received publicity on Dota 2’s homepage means that players abuse the system to try and one-up their ‘rivals’. This has led to a rise in bots as custom queues were repeatedly left. Thankfully, Valve has announced an intention to start clamping down on this, as Tweeted by Wykrhm Reddy:
There’s much more work to be done to help alleviate the problem, but it opens the door for some real change in the Dota 2 community.
