Fire Emblem: Three Houses released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019 and quickly became a top seller, with old and new fans alike enjoying the beautiful visuals, engaging storyline, and brilliant gameplay.
As well as offering plenty of replay value with its multiple story routes and endings, the game offered up a whole host of new Fire Emblem characters for fans to fall in love with. One of these characters was Bernadetta, a member of the Black Eagles, with fans adoring her endearing and shy personality. 10 Bernadetta von Varley
This adorable fanart by awan0918 shows a super cute Bernadetta hugging a large teddy bear in a suit. This is an ideal portrayal of her character as in the game her room has a bear inside, and you can also gift her the Armored Bear Stuffy item, a stuffed bear in cute armor.
Furthermore, her name is the female variant of the French name “Bernard”, which means “brave bear.” This is somewhat ironic as Bernadetta is not very brave when you first meet her.
9 Hobbyist
This fanart by zunbayasi shows a content Bernadetta in the safety of her own room enjoying one of her many hobbies. Bernadetta has various talents, such as writing, music, and sewing, likely due to the amount of time she can practice these skills as she is largely secluded in her room.
Despite isolating herself, Bernadetta does like to make friends. Bernadetta treats her classmates as role models, as she sees them all as fierce warriors that she one day hopes to emulate.
8 Glow up
Three Houses is split into two different halves, with the latter half being set five years in the future from the first half. This fanart by astroppy shows the changes that Bernadetta undergoes during these years, with her sporting a brand new look in both her hairstyle and clothing.
Although she is still a little uncertain of herself, this brand new style of hers appears to dictate that she has had a confidence boost of some kind, as before her wild hair almost appeared to hide her face. Now her hair is perfectly styled and everyone can see her clearly.
7 Archer
Bernadetta is an archer and despite having below-average luck and defense stats, her speed and dexterity stats are really good. Additionally, she has the potential to be your secret weapon in battle with her Persecution Complex personal skill. This means that when she is not at full health, she will deal an additional five points of damage to any enemy that she attacks.
This awesome fanart by kazuko_towa not only showcases Bernadetta in action with her bow but also manages to perfectly capture her lack of confidence on the battlefield.
6 Tragic Past
This beautiful fanart by leonmandala shows Bernadetta from the latter portion of the game where she is sporting her pretty new look, but she looks a little sad. This isn’t hard to believe given her tragic backstory. The reason that Bernadetta shuts herself away is that her father tormented her for years in what he called “training”, but was more accurately akin to torture.
This mental trauma caused Berndetta to become a recluse who doesn’t trust easily and who also has a phobia when it comes to her own father.
5 Crest Wielder
Artist kaijuicery has created this brilliant work of art that shows an older Bernadetta in action wielding The Inexhaustible Sacred Weapon, while the stunning use of light effects portrays her crest.
Bernadetta possesses the minor Crest of Saint Indech, the sign of the water dragon, which allows her to equip and use The Inexhaustible to better effect. This awesome bow allows the user to attack twice as well as restoring HP each turn. This bow can be obtained from the Legend of the Lake event.
4 The Lonely Student
This beautiful fanart by xcappu captures Bernadetta in isolation and looking rather lonely, despite having one of her favorite teddy bears close by. If the player chooses the Black Eagles as their class, Bernadetta is automatically one of their team members.
However, if the player chooses either of the other two houses, they can still recruit Bernadetta by raising their strength stat and bow proficiency. The stats required are lessened if the player has a good support rank with Bernadetta.
3 Conquerer of Fear
This artwork by same_tea7194 presents a Bernadetta that is resolved to do her best, with the determination evident in her eyes. Bernadetta has one of the many great character story arcs and it’s brilliant to see how far her character evolves.
One of the reasons that Bernadetta is afraid of social interaction is because as a child she interacted with a commoner boy, who her father disapproved of, and after he caught them together the boy was nearly beaten to death. However, by the end of Three Houses, she has grown to trust herself and her comrades a lot more.
2 Plant Enthusiast
Artist MIKAMI_3up has created this lovely image of Bernadetta with some of her favorite carnivorous plants. There are a few times during the game where players are able to see Bernadetta open up and be a little more happy and playful, and it is often when she is around flowers.
This is when her sweet and gentle side is shown the most. Additionally, when she isn’t panicking because she is distracted by hobbies such as tending to plants, Bernadetta can even seem a little more confident in herself.

This absolutely gorgeous piece of art by alex-chow is brimming with emotion and showcases the artist’s unique style. This artist has done similar pieces of other Fire Emblem characters, so be sure to check out the rest of their gallery too.
Bernadetta has unique battle models for the latter half of the game for archer and sniper and she uses a purple color for any other class that she is assigned. Unsurprisingly, Bernadetta has gone on to become a fan-favorite and often ranks highly in character popularity polls by Famitsu and Nintendo DREAM Magazine.
