Other than supports, the paralogue stories are one of the best ways to learn more about the characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Certain characters are called on in situations to do their duty for their family or their country (it tends to be a family matter since most of the families in Three Houses are messed up in some way or another).
Unlike in supports, paralogues show what the characters are willing to do for each other and their people. Rather than focusing on a relationship, the paralogues show the characters’ true nature because it’s a life or death situation and not a discussion in the hallway.
10 Darkness Beneath The Earth
The focus of this paralogue is on Hubert’s investigation into those who slither in the dark, with focus on Solon, Kronya, and Lord Arundel. Those who slither in the dark don’t get enough focus in the Azure Moon or Crimson Flower routes, so this paralogue helps counter that.
Hubert does come off as a little creepy, especially at the end, but he does say how the war will not be over when Fódlan is conquered. This gives the player a glimpse into how Hubert does have a plan to deal with those who slither in the dark when Edelgard wins.
9 Rumored Nuptials
This one focuses on the marriage proposal Ingrid might be forced to accept. However, when Dorothea catches wind of this she becomes furious and refuses to let her friend marry this suitor. They investigate the suitor and find out his fortune is mostly blood money.
This paralogue shows just how far Dorothea is willing to go for her friends, and how much she cares. Even during the pre-battle dialogue, she only stays to protect Ingrid and is relieved when she is safely back at the monastery.
8 Forgotten Hero
Poor Marianne. She was born with a crest that she considers a curse and hates herself for. To add insult to injury, during this paralogue she is blamed for attacking people in Margrave Edmund’s territory.
Just because she is the person she is, Marianne feels ashamed of her crest and asks the professor not to reveal it to anyone. She asks for the professor’s aid in defeating the beast. After it is over, Marianne smiles and says she feels like a human instead of a monster.
7 Weathervanes of Fódlan
This one does a lot to show the family dynamic of House Dominic. It reveals Annette’s father to be Gilbert (though the game doesn’t do a great job of concealing it in Azure Moon), her mother is living with Gilbert’s brother, and Gilbert and Baron Dominic are still close despite being on opposing sides.
Also, it shows the pressure many of the Kingdom’s lords are under. All of them aren’t betrayers of the Kingdom. Some had to join to protect their people from the Empire which is respectable.
6 The Face Beneath
This is a good one because of the connection between Mercedes and the Death Knight. Mercedes believes the Death Knight is her brother, Emile, and wishes to prove it. This paralogue is reminiscent of Return of the Jedi because it shows a killing machine in a black suit is not completely evil. Also, a family member affects them in positive ways.
This paralogue also shows that Caspar is willing to put his life on the line for his friends since he puts himself between Mercedes and the Death Knight.
5 War for the Weak
This paralogue further fleshes out Dimitri and Dedue’s relationship as not only prince and protector but also best friends. Dedue believes he is selfish for wanting to do this, but Dimitri says he wanted to help the people of Duscur as well. This story helps Dedue realize Dimitri did this for himself as much as he did it for Dedue.
Dedue has put all of his faith into Dimitri when it comes to the restoration of his people. He firmly believes Dimitri is going to make the change he wants, and it shows throughout this paralogue. This paralogue is crucial to keeping Dedue alive post-time-skip on the Blue Lions route, as well.
4 Dividing The World
What makes this one interesting is the way it expands the war going on by including Almyra. For the most part, Fódlan’s isolationist policies make it so not much goes on in the world of Three Houses during a campaign.
Fódlan’s Throat and Locket is referenced frequently in a playthrough, especially in the Golden Deer route. It expands the world of Three Houses because it shows Fódlan’s relationship with another country, and Cyril reveals a lot about Almyra’s attacks.
3 Insurmountable
This is the Crimson Flower version of the previous paralogue on this list. Just like the last one, it expands the world of Three Houses by being about an Almyran attack in Fódlan’s Locket.
It’s less about Almyra and more about the effect the war has had on Fódlan. Edelgard talks about how the Alliance lords don’t have the troops to defend the Locket due to the war. It does also show that Edelgard does want peace and says so at the end of the battle.
2 An Ocean View
This one shows the real relationship between Seteth and Flayn, whilst also showing a lot of their past. The beach is very special to them, and it’s easy to understand and feel that when you go there.
This paralogue also shows how much Seteth has come to respecting Byleth. In the first couple of chapters, Seteth constantly hounds Rhea on her decision to make Byleth a professor. At the end of this paralogue, he thanks Byleth in a recognition of their caring and their strength.
1 The Silver Maiden
This one is beautiful because of Dimitri and his character. The battle itself and the reasoning isn’t all that interesting, but post-battle so much happens. Dimitri is completely focused on his work as the new leader of the Kingdom and wears himself thin. He refuses to show weakness in front of Byleth, but they know better.
Byleth proves to be the best teacher because they show Dimitri he is still a good person without saying much. His past doesn’t define him, and they show him he can partake in a victory celebration and very much deserves. Plus, the background music sets the mood so well.
