More than ten months after its initial announcement, Marvel Realm of Champions finally reveals gameplay footage.
Since 2013, Marvel’s game department has been dedicating most of their resources to heavily monetized free-to-play games. Even if this might not be what most fans of the company want, new gameplay for Marvel Realm of Champions looks to be promising and add new mechanics to the mobile format.
Based on the gameplay trailer, as well as other videos released on the game’s YouTube channel over the past year, Marvel Realm of Champions might not feature any beloved characters from the Marvel universe. The game is set in an alternate universe, where the world is divided into factions based on classic Marvel heroes.
Looking a bit like an ARPG and a bit like a MOBA, the gameplay trailer is strikingly similar to Marvel: Future Fight, an RPG where players collect and level up a massive roster of heroes.
The new trailer also showed off the wide customization options that players can look forward to. We see a member of the Spider-Guild changing individual aspects of their outfit, including a chest piece, sleeves, pants, boots, a mask, and webshooters. It is likely that these pieces of armor will affect characters’ stats as well as appearances.
Based on the official website for the game, eight different factions will be available when the game releases. These factions are based on Doctor Strange, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Thor, Spider-Man, and Apocalypse. Each faction is lead by an altered version of a hero or villain that fans are used to.
The most confusing part of this trailer is that we only seem glimpses of the action without much context. Sure, it is somewhat similar to Future Fight, but this game claims to feature real time multiplayer matches. It does appear that the players are also fighting against AI monsters, in what appears to be small arenas. It even looks incredibly similar to jungles in games like League of Legends and DOTA 2. So why not come out and officially call this thing a MOBA?
Perhaps they don’t want to create competition for their other mobile MOBA, Marvel Super War, a game only available in select countries in Asia. Or, perhaps there is more to this new game than meets the eye. As a whole, the new trailer for Marvel Realm of Champions has raised more questions than answers. There is no release date yet, but hopeful players can sign up for email updates on the official website.
