A supposed image of the PS5 in a factory has appeared online, and it really is going to be a monster.
After the official reveal of the PS5 during Sony’s livestream presentation last week, there were a lot of rumors going around about just how massive the console is going to be. One redditor lined up of the biggest game consoles to scale (by matching the size of disc drive slots) and determined that the PS5 will be the biggest modern console we’ve ever seen. While far from scientific, the model seems to indicate pretty accurately just how large the PS5 will be.
An unsourced photo of 3 men holding a PS5 in a factory would indicate that this model is fairly accurate. The photo originated on the Resetera message board, an while we can’t confirm that the device in the image is an actual PlayStation 5, given the timing it seems fairly plausible.
It’s difficult to get an accurate sense of scale from the photo (no banana) but its clear that console is practically the full size of the man’s chest. Whether it’s the biggest console of all time or not, it’s clearly a lot bigger than both the PS4 and the PS4 Pro.
On Monday, PlayStation’s vice president of UX Design Matt MacLaurin addressed the size of the PS5 on his LinkedIn page, explaining that the incredible processing power of the PS5 generates a lot of heat, and therefore would need a larger build for the sake of thermals.
This should reasoning should be of great relief to PS4/Pro users have no doubt experienced the acute stress that comes from listening to your consoles work itself like a jet engine. The compact PS4 fans can get extremely loud, worryingly so, and it’s only gotten worse over the lifetime of the PS4 as games have gotten more visually impressive and more demanding on the hardware.
If the PS5 has to be the size of a large pizza to keep the noise down, so be it. I’m sure we’ll all manage to find a way to store it on our shelves, even if the PS4 spot won’t accommodate the upgrade. As long as I can hold a conversation with my indoor voice while playing PS5, I’ll be happy.
