As the month turns to August, Xbox Live’s Games with Gold have begun their rollout of free games for subscribers. This month there is a collection of 4 eclectic games available and the first two can be downloaded right now.
Portal Knights is the first game on the free Xbox Live Games With Gold for August 2020 list, and it will be available throughout the whole month. While the game bears some visual similarities to Minecraft, and even some gameplay mechanics too, the title has more in common with the Minecraft Dungeons spin-off.
That being said, Portal Knights players can also indulge their creativity by building bases and customizing their characters into different classes. Whether they want to be ranged, melee, magic, or even some combination, Portal Knights offers a couple of different options.
The other game available now for August 2020 is MX Unleashed, a motorbike racing game released back in 2004. Microsoft made MX Unleashed backward compatible on the Xbox One in 2018 but now players can enjoy the game regardless of if they own a copy of the original or not.
At the height of THQ’s popularity, the publisher was regularly putting out games featuring alternate sports like wrestling and ATV racing. MX Unleashed was by no means a runaway success for THQ but it did receive mostly positive reviews upon release.
Unlike Portal Knights, MX Unleashed will only be available for the first half of August, from the 1st until the 15th. So if Xbox Live Gold subscribers are interested in MX Unleashed they should download the game (or add it to their Xbox One games library) sooner than later.
The latter half of August (and even into September) includes another duo of games. From August 16th to August 31st, Xbox Live Gold subscribers can download Red Faction 2, another one of THQ’s critical darlings. While not as memorable as Red Faction Guerrilla, which received the full remaster treatment last year, Red Faction 2 still has plenty of fans.
The final game in Xbox Live Gold’s selection is Override: Mech City Brawl, which will be available from August 16th until September 15th. It’s likely the game that people are the least familiar with, but it does offer something unique.
Override: Mech City Brawl features giant robots battling it out in a variety of environments, from a city filled with skyscrapers to a sprawling desert. Players can customize their mechs with a variety of different combat options, looks, and colors. It’s not the typical robots vs. Kaiju experience that fans of movies like Pacific Rim are familiar with, but Override: Mech City Brawl does offer a similar scale with its fights.
As mentioned, Portal Knights and MX Unleashed are available for Xbox Live Gold subscribers right now, while Red Faction 2 and Override: Mech City Brawl will release on August 16th.
