The number of endless runner games available on iOS and Android devices, along with the Nintendo Switch is staggering. The unfortunate part is that most of those titles are just tired rehashings of other runners, most of which use in-game microtransactions to make the experience “better.” Fledgling Heroes - from Austrian indie studio Subtle Boom - looks like it could be breathing new life into the genre when the game releases for Nintendo Switch on May 7, 2020.

Boasted as a “side-scrolling flap ‘em up game,” players will take on the roll of brave, colorful birds flying throughout a treacherous world filled with pirate-like “lizARRrds” out to stop them (for some reason). The game will feature over 90 levels and a variety landscapes, including frozen forests and sunken temples, with players having to avoid obstacles while collecting items along the way.

Along with its four different game modes - which will include quest levels, ring race challenges, head-to-head boss levels, and seeing how far you can fly in an endless level mode - Fledgling Heroes will feature a fully customizable level editor, which will allow players to try out other player-made challenges online. Players will also be able to customize their birds’ colors and battle it out against each other in local couch co-op.

Why release the game on Nintendo Switch, versus a mobile platform? Subtle Boom Co-founder Brandon Watts explained:

Fledgling Heroes definitely seems to fall in line with that explanation with its colorful experience that will be fun and accessible for younger players when it releases next month on the Nintendo eShop for $9.99. If Fledgling Heroes sounds right up your family’s alley, you’ll want to be sure to take advantage of the pre-order sale that begins on April 23rd and features a 15% discount.

“Switch seemed like the natural place to bring Fledgling Heroes. Growing up with Nintendo consoles, it was always a dream to one day make a game for one. We’ve dedicated a lot of time and care making sure the game meets the expectations the Nintendo audience has enjoyed from high-quality family titles.”
