As someone who worked from home even before we all had to, I was vaguely aware of ergonomics. Yet as a poor, struggling writer in New York City, I never had the cash flow to invest in a new desk setup. That led to me writing off things like expensive gaming chairs and standing desks as silly trends. Who would want to stand if sitting was an option? I got enough working on my feet during my retail days. Now that I’ve had a chance to try it out using Flexispot’s Comhar EG8, though, I get it.
What The Comhar EG8 Actually Does
You’re probably familiar with the concept of a standing desk, but the EG8 takes it a little further. Yes, it goes up and down (up to 48 inches high) thanks to a little electrically-powered motor. But it also has security and convenience features you might have not realized a standing desk would need. Four buttons act as memory pre-sets to record preferred heights. A lock button keeps kids (and energetic dogs, according to one customer review) from moving the desk accidentally and hurting themselves. Not that they should be able to, anyway, thanks to the desk’s ability to auto-detect a collision and stop moving.
In practice, I was amazed at how easy it was to use. Not that I expected the concept of “up and down” to baffle me, but Flexispot made setup seamless. After taking it out of the box. all you have to do is screw on the legs and plug it in. The motor is already affixed and ready to go. I also appreciate the three USB ports on the front of the desk for easy charging. The memory pre-sets also came in handy as I share the desk with my girlfriend. Having four sets gives us both a standing and sitting height of our own.
Is Standing Actually Doing Anything?
Look, there’s studies out there that could probably explain this stuff better than I can. All I can say, after about two weeks of use, is that the option to stand is nice. As someone who works eight hours a day in front of a computer screen, I need the ability to switch things up for my mental and physical health. Being able to take my setup to literal new heights at the press of a button is is a great way to break up my work day. You’d be surprised how much one little adjustment can shake up your thinking.
Same goes for gaming–if I find myself throwing too many matches of Battlefront 2, I stand to pep up and get back in the game. I’m still trash compared to these level 258s, but I start to show a little more map awareness after I stand.
The Comhar EG8 As A Gaming Desk
As a standard desk, the EG8 gives an impressive amount of space and a clean, professional look. I have a solid white EG8 with a glass finish. The simple design means it should go with the aesthetic of any home office or student’s room. That said, I do have some minor issues with the design as a gamer. There’s no cable management solutions built in. That’s a feature I love about my Eureka Ergonomics desk, which runs cheaper than the EG8. It also lacks the cup holder and headphone stand, other amenities offered by gaming-focused desks. On the other hand, the USB ports are very handy for charging controllers.
With a few months left before most people are vaccinated, staying at home is still recommended. Even if it wasn’t, many companies are shifting to that model permanently. So, if you find your home is now your office, an upgrade could well be in order. A standing desk is a fantastic investment to help your body and mind endure the monotony of being at home all day. This is especially true if you need your work desk to also be your gaming desk.
As a work desk, the Comhar EG8 is something you should consider. Its sleek design and convenience features put it beyond the average standing desk. As a gaming desk, the EG8 is wide enough for your multi-monitor setup but lacks cable management. As a multi-purpose desk, it’s definitely worth considering.
A Comhar EG8 was provided to TheGamer for this review. To mark the release of this latest model, the Flexispot site is selling the desk at sale price.
