For Honor features many brutal and challenging heroes to play as and battle against. The Warden, a member of the Iron Legion Knights faction, is arguably the most adaptable and easy to master out of all the hero types players have access to, as well as being one of the most popular. For Honor consistently ranks highly in players’ favorite sword fighting games, and what better character exemplifies the core ideals of the game than the Warden — a classic, longsword wielding, honor-bound knight?
Picking up the basics is easy for this Vanguard, but here’s what you need to know to master the Warden and slay any enemy that comes your way.
7 Excels In Dominion
Dominion is the most popular game mode in For Honor and thankfully, for Warden players, seems to be purpose build for them. The Warden’s longsword is perfect at capturing the center control point, where you can take joy in defeating multiple enemies soldiers in a single heavy attack swing. If the Body Count feat is used in conjunction, then the Warden also gets health back for every enemy soldier killed.
While killing soldiers will gain the Warden renown, they will also gain points by taking the other control points around the map, and whilst being outnumbered by other heroes. In this game mode, the Warden feels closest to the creative director’s original vision for the game, before he lost creative control.
6 Remember to Guardbreak
A move often forgotten by players until they reach a high ledge, the guard break is perfect for crowd control — something the Warden is great at. While perfectly satisfying to use on a cliffside, letting you send another hero tumbling to their death, there are also plenty of environmental map hazards scattered around the battlefield.
The Warden can get up close and personal with their shoulder bash, and then quickly manoeuvre this into a guard break, allowing them to decide where exactly their unfortunate enemy will meet their demise — falling into a giant saw or burning in molten steel, you decide!
5 Perfect For Any Role Your Team Requires
While PC players have had the opportunity to pick up For Honor for free a few times since its launch, Xbox players are now also able to, providing they have a Games Pass subscription.
Since the Warden is perfect for new players and veterans alike, it will likely remain the most popular hero, meaning teams in Dominion will always have a solid squad to battle with. The simplicity of their move set lets the Warden go toe to toe against all hero types with ease, provided you can block effectively. If you can, then a double light attack into shoulder bash combo will make sure enemies focus solely on the Warden, which will keep the heat off the other, more specialized heroes.
4 Shoulder Bash Everyone
Shoulder Bash is the staple of the Warden. If timed correctly it is unblockable, and you should try to use it after every double light combo. It can even push enemies off ledges the same way throwing from a guard break can, but without interrupting the flow of combat. If you’re very lucky, and the enemy is bad at blocking and parrying, you can repeat the double light into shoulder bash move for as long as you have stamina.
It is susceptible to dodging, so you will need to keep an eye on your enemy. If you see the dodge coming, fake the shoulder bash and perform an area of effect sword sweep instead. Switching between these two is a good strategy to keep other players on the back foot.
3 Revenge Is Your Friend
Since Wardens gain renown from being surrounded by enemies, providing you can block and parry effectively, you should attempt to get into two-on-one fights in the enemies’ favor. Doing so will help build the revenge bar that, once full, can be activated. This evens the odds by giving Wardens (with the thrilling comeback feat) bonus health and making it so any successful parry will knock attackers to the floor.
During this mode, players also have unlimited stamina, which is where the area of effect attack shines. While usually the most costly in the stamina department, it can be used continuously as long as revenge is active, dealing massive damage to any enemies in the way.
2 Make Use Of Feats
As an often neglected feature for many players in For Honor, feats can completely change the tide of battle in any game mode they are available. Body count, for example, is one of the more important feats for the Warden, as it allows them to gain health by killing the enemy soldiers that fight in the central control point of most maps. This suits the Warden’s role as a leader, by taking control points for your team, and can really help if there are no other ways to gain health.
Catapult is also a good choice for taking out more than one hero of the enemy team at a time. If the other team is breaking, a well-timed Catapult can finish the game in seconds. But, be sure to choose the feats that best match the play style of your Warden.
1 Conserve Stamina
The Warden can attack with some devastating moves, but the downside is their stamina. After a few heavy or area of effect attacks, they will be out of stamina completely and you will need to be cautious to stay alive.
Try not to let the stamina bar empty, and instead keep an eye on it when it gets low, and back into a more defensive stance. Being able to block is crucial if you are backed against a corner, but as soon as the Wardens Stamina is back, hit the enemy with a double light attack combo and get back into the fight with a signature shoulder bash.
