At Gamescom 2014, Sony announced Wild, a PS4 exclusive where players would be a shaman who has a deep connection with nature. Wild gameplay trailers showed how players would be able to shapeshift into animals and other aspects of nature. The game offered some exciting features, however, it has yet to be released.
For fans who have been patiently waiting for the game, there may be some hope. A listing on the World International Property Organization reveals that Sony has filed a trademark for Wild in the United States. While Sony already had several active trademarks for the game’s logo in several countries (United States, Europe, Australia between 2016 and 2017), this new trademark was filed on March 13, 2019, and is still pending.
Michel Ancel, who founded Wild Sheep Studios (Wild’s developer) is also working on Ubisoft’s Beyond Good and Evil 2. Ancel’s involvement in the project is unclear but in 2018, the developer did say that the team is still working hard on it. The developer’s comments and Sony’s application for a trademark seem to confirm that the game is still in the works in 2019.
However, many will be wondering if Wild is still in development for PS4 or whether the development team is looking to the next-generation of consoles. It wouldn’t be the first time that this has happened. The Last Guardian, a game that was in development for PS3 for several years, had its development rebooted and eventually The Last Guardian released on PS4 to critical acclaim.
With the PS5 potentially releasing in 2020 (according to analysts), it could mean that Wild will be a launch title for the console. The wide expanses of the game’s setting, its procedural generation, and a potentially huge list of animals to shapeshift into would be a brilliant way to show off the technical power of the PlayStation 5.
Most of Sony’s efforts are on the PS5 and there is speculation that the company has already sent out development kits. However, there are still a few hotly anticipated PS4 games set to release before the new console launches. There’s Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima, the new IP from inFamous developer Sucker Punch Productions. It’s unclear whether Wild will be part of this final batch of PS4 exclusives, but those who’ve been following the game for years will hope so.
Wild is in development exclusively for PS4.
