In recent years, developer Guerrilla Games has been best known for its success with 2017’s PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn. While there’s clear indication the open-world RPG will be getting a sequel sometime in the future, a recent hiring by the company could mean the return of another well-known series which has laid dormant for the past few years.
The team based out of Amsterdam recently announced they were beginning to expand with a brand new studio location, along with a desire to increase the headcount of Guerrilla Games to about 400 employees. Among those whom have been hired are former Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege developers Simon Larouche and Chris Lee. The significance of the new hires is that the former previously worked with Guerrilla Games in the past as part of the development team for 2009’s Killzone 2.
While Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of the most successful games to release for the PlayStation 4, Guerrilla Games did also continue with its beloved sci-fi first person shooter series by releasing Killzone Shadow Fall as a launch title for the system back in 2013. After the launch of Killzone Shadow Fall however, Guerrilla moved its entire team to working on Horizon, which shows given the success the game has had as well as having released The Frozen Wild DLC story expansion last year.
With the return of Simon Larouche however, this leaves speculation for people to believe Guerrilla Games also has a new Killzone project in the works alongside Horizon’s sequel. However, there’s not much else to go off of other than Larouche’s experience with online multiplayer shooters would be a strong fit for an eventual return to making Killzone games.
Given the increased headcount at Guerrilla Games’ new studio, it would make sense to have multiple projects being worked on at the same time for the company so as to not increase the risk if one of its games underperforms. With the Killzone franchise dating all the way back to the PlayStation 2 era, there’s both a fanbase that would love to see the franchise return, as well as the high install base of PS4 users increasing the number of potential sales a possible return to Killzone could garner. Either way, it will probably be a while until fans get any news about the futures of both Horizon and / or Killzone.
