A former Sony executive has admitted that had the company not learned from the mistakes it made with the PS3, the PS4 could have been PlayStation’s final console.
PlayStation has been one of the heavy hitters for the past four generations of console, and currently sits at 4 and 0 in that war. It could even be argued that it won three of those generations by a landslide against Nintendo in round one and then Xbox in rounds two and four. It’s the third round where there was some ambiguity. The PS3 versus the Xbox 360.
Even though the PS3 still outsold its main rival, it was something of a photo finish. What’s more, it remains the only mainstream PlayStation console to not break the 100 million units sold barrier. Its final number came in at a still-impressive 87.4 million units, but a former Sony executive has revealed all was not well with the company at the time.
Shahid Ahmad, who worked at Sony Interactive Entertainment for ten years before departing in 2015, tells all about PlayStation’s rocky period in an upcoming documentary titled The PlayStation Revolution. “A lot of work had to be done to turn around the technical deficit and the monetary deficit created by the launch of this extraordinary piece of hardware,” Ahmad revealed while discussing the PS3.
“We’d been through the fire with PS3 and now everything was on the line. We had to get this right and if we didn’t, it could’ve been the end,” Ahmad admits when covering the launch of the PS4. He reveals that there had been a change in attitude compared to the previous generation. The focus was back on the players, and everything was in place well ahead of time.
The rest, as they say, is history. The PS4 has gone to sell 112 million units and counting, and gamers eagerly await the arrival of the PS5. If workers on Sony’s backend are anything to go by, the company is expecting an even warmer reception to the PS5. The console is expected to sell at least 120 million units during its lifetime, with some even predicting it will outsell the PS2 which is currently the best-selling console of all time.
