A former Xbox executive who worked on all three of its consoles to date has said there is no chance Sony launches the PlayStation5 at a higher price than $499.
With each passing day, the arrival of the next generation of consoles gets a little bit closer. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X have Holiday 2020 release dates, which could mean they arrive as early as October of this year. Sony revealed a lot of information about its console last week, showcasing more than 20 game trailers and showing off what the PS5 will look like.
The one thing Sony didn’t let gamers in on was how much the console is going to cost. The belief is that radio silence in regard to both consoles and their respective prices is due to fear that if they go first, their rival will undercut them. It has happened in the past, but with not much time left until release day, someone has to blink first.
“I believe in the saying ’never say never,’ but I gotta say never. No way this console is over $499,” Albert Penello tweeted in response to rumors the PS5 will cost $600. Penello, who was part of the marketing team for all three of Xbox’s previous consoles, went on to add that he believes the prices of the next-gen consoles will play an even bigger role in their success than the exclusives they offer.
Chances are Sony learned its lesson when it comes to pricetags via the release of the PS3. The console cost $599 at launch and Sony paid for pricing it so high. The PS4 launched for $200 less and seven years later has sold more than 100 million units. All of that in mind, it makes sense that Penello wouldn’t think Sony would be foolish enough to risk a repeat of what happened two generations ago.
