Ahead of the official Fortnite season 10 launch, which developer Epic Games has appropriately dubbed Season X, the patch notes detail one of the newest additions to the game: the 2-player BRUTE mech suit. It is essentially a vehicle where one player operates the movement of the suit, whereas the other operates the suit’s firepower. Notably, Fortnite does draw attention to the fact that it could be used solo by switching between the driver and the gunner seats, but this would probably not be easy for players in their new twisted skins.

The functionality of each is somewhat limited but will likely work well in conjunction, with the BRUTE driver being able to dash into combat, perform a super jump, stomp enemies and structures, and quickly gather materials. Instead of using the Fortnite pickaxe to get mats, destroying any harvestable item will grant materials when destroyed.

This will feed directly into the Fortnite BRUTE mech suit’s new Overshield mechanic, which will likely be an activated ability that will do well in combat. This new mechanic creates a personal “overshield” that protects the player in the mech for 5 seconds, preventing other players from sniping or getting up-close in combat as long as the overshield is up. It comes at a cost, however, as it will consume 200 of any material type.

The gunner has two weapons, a shotgun and a mission launcher. The BRUTE mech’s shotgun has a clip size of 10, deals 50 damage, and has a headshot multiplier of 1.5, likely meaning this will be a devastating gun up-close that doesn’t hopefully bring back something similar to the days of the double pump strategy. This new Fortnite suit also comes with a missile launcher that can fire up to 10 missiles at once, which is loaded by holding the trigger and fired by releasing it (if 10 missiles have been loaded, it will automatically fire).

The BRUTE mech suit is definitely an attention-getter, with many likely eager to try it out when they drop on the new season 10 battle island. However, others have noticed how much the suit resembles the titans from Titanfall, which, if nothing else, highlights the competition between Fortnite and Apex Legends. Fortnite has copied the ping system in the past from the latter, but this time around, it seems Fortnite beat Apex to the punch.

Fortnite is out now for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
