Fortnite’s first post-Season 8 update is now available. Patch v8.01 delivers on one of the season’s biggest promises, Buried Treasure. Battle royale players can now track down a chest full of legendary loot, just like the Fortnite Season 8 cinematic trailer promised. Buried Treasure isn’t the only reward to be discovered in patch v8.01, however. The update also brings with it the Slide Duos Limited Time Mode and the two Gauntlet tournament test events.
Buried Treasure maps in Fortnite works just as anyone might expect. Players can find treasure maps which lead directly to a cache of loot. Simply follow the directions on the map (X marks the spot) and dig up the loot with a pickaxe. Treasure maps can be found from both floor loot and chests, but only one map can be held at a time. To make it worth players’ while, all Buried Treasure holds legendary loot.
One thing that isn’t clear is if treasure maps will lead multiple groups to the same location, like insinuated in Fortnite’s Season 8 trailer. But there’s no better way to find out than to start up Fortnite and dig up some buried treasure for yourself.
Aside from the Buried Treasure, plenty more is added in v8.01, but perhaps the most exciting addition is Fortnite’s in-test tournament events. Starting today, players can try out the new Gauntlet Solo Test Event and the Gauntlet Duo Test Event. This is a test of several different “format updates,” perhaps in preparation of April’s $1,000,000 World Cup qualifying events.
The tournament testing event will last through March 9 and players will be paired against others with similar point totals, with points earned via kills (+1) and match placement (25th and above earn 3 or more points) but subtracted through participation (Bus Fare is -2 points). Matchmaking for tournament matches can take up to 8 minutes in order to create the best quality of competition. The top 5% of players will be invited to a special 3-hour Finals event, with the top 3000 players advancing to “Round 2” on March 10.
Players can log into Fortnite right now and check out all of the new changes. Between the tournament, the treasure maps, and the LTM that makes all players have ice blocks on their feet, there should be plenty of new battle royale content for everyone.
Fortnite is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
