Epic Games will once again leverage the power of platform within Fortnite to continue the much-needed discourse on racial inequality. Following up on its successful in-game screening of “We The People” on July 4, the next presenting will feature Opus United’s “We The People x More Than A Vote” beginning Tuesday, July 28 at 7PM ET. Viewing will also be available simultaneously on the Houseparty app.

Based on the preview below, it appears that the overall themes will remain the same in a series of conversations between athletes and entertainers with that aims to “inspire and empower young adults to take action against the voter suppression crisis that is disproportionately impacting Black communities”.

This time around the guests speaking on these important issues will be host Cari Champion, athlete Jason Heyward, rapper and activist Bun B, athlete and sports host Jalen Rose, actress and comedian Yvonne Orji and rapper Russ.

Anyone who attends the screening in game between July 28 and 29 will receive a free emote, Verve, as a gift. The newest emote was the winner of the #EmoteRoyaleContest and created by Michaek Mejeh.

It is great to see that Epic Games is continuing to use its platform to encourage much-needed discourse on the top of racism in the USA. There is certainly potential for even more work to be done, and so far the screening of media within the Fortnite game seems to be a viable concept for long-term use.

With that said, most developers are wary of making the move towards deliberate activism and staying out of politics completely, and pointing a finger at those who choose not to participate is not always easy when considering that smaller developers may be working on razor-thin margins, and supporting certain causes could spell doom for their organizations.

With that said, now is the time for the big AAA developers to really step up and match this level of engaging discourse that Epic Games is striving towards, and to stop providing mere lip service. Blizzard has been particularly guilty of this, going as far as to providing a statement in support of their grand “efforts” towards supporting Black Lives Matter. The words are lovely, but in sum only rely a few efforts made internally, doing nothing to encourage discourse with its millions of consumers.

Then again, if the Blitzchung controversy has shown us anything, it is that Blizzard is only interested in doing what’s right for their bottom line.

For now, Opus United’s “We The People x More Than A Vote” will premiere July 28 at 7PM ET in Fortnite and simultaneously on the Houseparty app. We hope to see many players in game!
