Fortnite developers have warned fans via social media not to fall for scam websites offering them free or discounted V-Bucks.

Pay-to-play has been a hotly debated and extremely controversial topic in the gaming world recently. Certain games and gaming companies creating situations in which players have to spend money in order to remain competitive. Considering a large chunk of gamers are children, that can create quite a few issues. Plus really is it fair to anyone of any age that they’re not as good as their competitors simply because they can’t afford to be?

You might expect that since Fortnite is free to download and play that it would rely heavily on players paying to play and be better than everyone else, but it is exactly the opposite. All players in Battle Royale mode start off with exactly the same thing, an axe, and can’t attain additional weapons until they reach the ground. It means that at square one everyone is equal, or at least has an equal chance based purely on their own ability.

You can spend money on Fortnite though. If you’ve played it casually without spending money, you will likely have noticed other players in crazy outfits with flashy looking axes. That’s because they have traded in some real-world money for Fortnite’s V-Bucks. While they can’t use the game’s currency to improve their chances or ability, they can alter the appearance of their avatars.

If you are planning on getting your hands on some V-Bucks, be sure to go through the proper channels. Fortnite developers sent out a warning via Twitter late last week warning players to stay away from scam sites. They made it clear that “The only official websites for Fortnite are epicgames.com and fortnite.com.” So if you’re offered any from anywhere else, even for free, we would highly recommend that you decline.

Ultimately, as detailed above, you don’t even need V-Bucks in order to play Fortnite or even to be good at it. You could potentially become the best player on the planet without even spending a penny. That would certainly show up those who have forked out for season passes and wacky costumes. Then again, isn’t hunting down opponents a lot more fun when you’re wearing an astronaut costume and can dance once you’ve defeated them?
