Fortnite has disabled its Playground Mode in order to fix matchmaking issues with the Battle Royale game. Players started noticing problems shortly after the servers went live following update 4.5 and Epic Games was quick to hold an emergency maintenance. However, once things calmed down the Playground Mode was disabled.
As of yet, Epic Games does not have an ETA on when the Playground Mode might return to Fortnite but the developer does say that it is working on bringing Playground back. This is not a case where the mode was causing enough problems that it needed to be disabled indefinitely, however, this is still a limited time offering.
For those that might not regularly keep up with the goings-on of Fortnite, the Playground Mode is exactly that. Players respawn upon elimination, weapons drop in greater numbers, and materials are more plentiful. In essence, it’s an opportunity to create or practice strategies, all without the pressure of a normal Battle Royale match.
Epic Games has yet to say what exactly about the Playground Mode was causing the matchmaking problems but it’s safe to assume that letting players run wild on the map was hard on the game’s servers. Within the first few hours of Playground being live, we saw everything from players wiping out every landmark to destroying Titled Towers with a “single bullet.”
“We know you want to get back out to the Playground LTM. We’ve got multiple teams working to get this mode back into your hands so you can let your imaginations run wild.
We want to inform you that the Playground LTM will remain closed for repairs for the night. We’ll have more information available tomorrow.”
No doubt domino-style creations like these are going to tax the Fortnite Battle Royale servers, all while millions of other players are trying to get in regular matches. Losing matchmaking to the more popular segments of the game because of Playground is not in Epic’s best interest.
Although we are nearing the launch of Season 5 in Fortnite and Epic Games probably has a calendar of events planned, hopefully the developer can squeeze in another Playground week so that players can experience it for the full 7 days. While some figured it would be used to practice for Fortnite tournaments, the player base has found some really creative ways to use the mode and we’d like to see more.
Fortnite Battle Royale is available now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and iOS.
