Epic Games and People Can Fly’s incredibly popular battle royale game Fortnite has hit some huge milestones over the past few weeks. For example, on PC and console the game now makes more money each month than PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds which is particularly impressive given that Fortnite Battle Royale launched after PUBG. But Fortnite isn’t done growing yet and a new report confirms that the game is beating other heavyweights in the multiplayer gaming sector.

Industry analysis firm SuperData Research has released its worldwide digital games market report for February 2018. On PC, Fortnite Battle Royale is the sixth highest grossing game and sits behind titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (fifth) and League of Legends (first). Meanwhile, on consoles Fortnite Battle Royale is third behind FIFA 18 (second) and Call of Duty: WW2 (first).

But the positions on the highest grossing chart table aren’t the only thing that the Fortnite team has to smile about. SuperData also confirms that the game earned “more additional content revenue on console than any game other than Call of Duty: WWII.”

Moreover, Fortnite has more active users than Grand Theft Auto Online, the multiplayer mode of Grand Theft Auto 5. GTA Online developer Rockstar Games is aware of the success of Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds which is why it introduced a battle royale mode. But this isn’t enough to fend off the fierce competition from the likes of Fortnite.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was one of the most lucrative games of 2017 and it made half a billion dollars in revenue, with much of that figure being thanks to GTA Online either in terms of people buying the game to play online or in microtransactions. Many will be wondering whether Fortnite can secure its place as the most lucrative games of 2018 and whether it can continue to draw more monthly users than the Rockstar Games-developed title.

Fortnite certainly looks poised for additional success this year as these are not the only significant statistics that the battle royale game has produced. The game recently set a new record on YouTube, for example, with the video sharing and live-streaming platform confirming that Fortnite holds the record for the most videos uploaded for a video game in a single month. It has also been a massive success on live-streaming platform Twitch. This continued social media success could help to grow Fortnite even further, meaning that GTA Online isn’t the only major multiplayer title that needs to watch its back.

Fortnite is available now in early access for iOS devices, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
