One of Fortnite’s newest weapons is the Flare Gun, and players who have seen it and shrugged it off might want to think again.

Epic is constantly adding and removing weapons to and from Fortnite to keep things fresh. Whether it be Drum Guns, Shotguns, or otherwise, plenty of Fortnite’s wide array of weapons continue to come and go. This season, a brand new weapon was added to the roster. A weapon that was teased all the way back in the summer of 2019, but didn’t arrive until last month.

The weapon is the Flare Gun, and it can be used in a number of different ways. In the real world, flare guns are used to attract attention. While that could be the reason for using one in Fortnite since teammates can place markers, and firing a flare would reveal someone’s position to allies and enemies alike, firing a flare up into the sky doesn’t seem like such a bright idea.

Since it’s a weapon, that’s the way in which most players have been using it. However, that’s not very effective either, at least not directly. Fortnite’s Flare Guns can only fire one round at a time, and they only deal 60 damage. What’s more, it takes 1.5 seconds to reload the weapon, so unless it’s a direct hit on an already damaged player, probably best to stick to something else.

Enough of why the Flare Gun is not so great, and more on why it is. Although it might sound counter-productive, the best time to use a Flare Gun is when a player isn’t 100% sure where their enemies might be. That’s because a round from the gun will set the builds and trees around it alight. That fire will not only smoke out any players hiding out but also deal damage to them if they touch it.

As for where Flare Guns can be found, as with most weapons, they will be in Chests, Supply Drops, and Llamas. They won’t come around often, though. There’s a 9.2% chance of finding one in a Supply Chest, Llama, or Supply Drop, and a 4.03% chance of finding one in a regular chest. Since most players don’t appreciate how helpful Flare Guns can be, there’s also a chance you’ll find one abandoned by someone else.
