Fortnite’s Update 5.40 officially drops today, and it brings plenty of fresh wares to Epic Games’ wildly popular multiplayer sandbox survival shooter, including the highly anticipated event known as High Stakes. It’s no stretch of the imagination to say that myriad players are currently delving into all the patch has to offer, but of course, there are always those who are keeping their eyes peeled for what’s around the bend. Speaking of which, a recent datamine has potentially uncovered that such new additions as weapon skins, pets, and more could be on the way.
As seen in the tweet below, Fortnite fans are given a look at some of the game files containing assets for the free-to-play Battle Royale title, and not only are weapon skins and pets possibly in the cards, but also Epic Games could be adding custom Battle Bus skins and music packs as well. What’s more is that two different files are respectively titled “Toys” and “Vehicle Decoration”, insinuating that the developer intends on providing even more items for players to more fully trick out their experiences.
While the prospect of such features as weapon skins, Battle Bus cosmetics, and pets should intrigue avid Fortnite fans, it’s worth noting that there’s a possibility that these assets might not actually make it in to the game. Even though these file names exist, Epic could decide to scrap them before bringing them into the title. After all, a similar situation occurred when certain backpack items were leaked from game files, but the developer never went on to officially add some of them.
All things considered, should Fortnite eventually bring all of the aforementioned materials into the game, then it will definitely be yet another move by Epic that will help the studio both catch up and further distinguish its free-to-play Battle Royale title from competitors like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Sure, Bluehole Studio recently brought a new weapon skins system to PUBG, but including pets may be a bridge too far for the semi-realistic shooter.
Fortnite is available now in early access for iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with an Android beta currently underway.
