Back in October 2019, Fortnite did something unprecedented; they completely shut down their game for days, leaving players with a lot of questions and an internet filled with Fortnite Black Hole memes. It looks like they may be gearing up to do it again soon as some Doomsday devices have been leaked for the Battle Royale.

The Fortnite of pre-black hole, or Chapter 1, was a completely different map then what players would see logging in today. After the game exploded, players logged in to see nothing but a black hole and couldn’t play Fortnite for several days. After that, Chapter 2 began, which has been spy-themed and seems to be leading up something big. There have been small changes to Pleasant Park and other parts of the map, hinting at big changes coming.

A Reddit user, Jonathan287, uncovered a new Doomsday device in the Doom Room on Fortnite’s menu. While it’s not currently on the map, the appearance of this device adds more rumor to the hints of a Doomsday Event that’s heading for Fortnite. Previously, players found Doomsday hatches in The Agency in the center of the map, though no one could open them, even with the Keycards that appeared later on in the game.

Fortnite is dropping a lot of hints that there is going to be some kind of catastrophic event, either brought about by the strain between Ghost and Shadow factions or the weird battle going on in the Weeping Woods between gnomes with telescopes and teddy bears. Since the whole end-of-the-world thing has been done before, it seems like Fortnite might try it again since it got so much publicity last time.

Players are guessing as to what changes could come to the map because of all these Doomsday rumors flying around. It may have something to do with a live event that this is leading up to, or perhaps a massive map change like a post-nuclear-war style update.

Regardless of the changes coming, if Fortnite is just planning on blowing up the map again and shutting down their servers for another couple of days, it will annoy more people than it get talking. It may have worked once, but it doesn’t seem like the type of thing that would be successful a second time. Hopefully this is the beginning of interesting update and not just another publicity stunt for memes and attention.

Fortnite is available for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh operating systems.
