Things appear to be evolving in the world of Fortnite Battle Royale. Last week following the release of update 5.3 and the new Score Royale mode, the map received a new location called Tomato Temple as well as randomized lightning strikes. Naturally, speculation led the community to believe all sorts of content was coming such as a new limited time mode or perhaps even a promotion tied to the long-awaited Save the World mode going free to play. Ultimately, however, the lightning led to the appearance of a strange purple cube, which a few players found a way to get inside of.

After the appearance of the purple cube within Fortnite’s popular Battle Royale mode, many players attempted to interact with it to see what it would do. A Reddit user named Gsonicify and his buddies actually managed to glitch inside the cube after landing on it and continually striking the top of it with a pickaxe. From there it appeared they had fallen through the map but moving around revealed the dark space was actually resting on top of the Paradise Palms map. Using a created staircase, the duo were able to reenter the cube at will until another user came in and took them out.

Previous to this accidental discovery, the cube could be found recharging player shields for those who got close enough. Other players attempted to land on it after dropping in or striking it with their pickaxe, which caused players to bounce and got launched off of it. Outside of that, the cube has recently started moving, though where it’s destined to end up isn’t clear. Theories generated online believe it’s heading northwest to Salty Springs or moving to destroy something originally made by the season 5 rifts.

As to what’s really going on with the purple cube is anyone’s guess. Compared to previous seasons, it’s likely something will happen that leads players into the next season similar to the comet strikes from the end of season 3 to the missile strike which opened a massive rift at the start of season 5. Even with a few weeks left in the current season, Epic is clearly moving the experience in a certain direction first with the shrinking massive sky rift, followed more recently by the lightning strikes and giant purple cube.

Fortnite is out now in early access for iOS, Android, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
