The newest season of Fortnite has introduced new cars into the game that players will soon be able to drive. However, observant players have noticed that one type of car, police cars, have seemingly disappeared from the game.
Fortnite’s map is covered with a wide variety of vehicles, including ice cream trucks, passenger cars, and many more. These vehicles can also be found in Creative mode as a part of sets of pre-fab vehicles players can use to decorate. The recent flooding that struck in the latest season of Fortnite has sunk a good amount of these vehicles from the main game’s map, but police cars, in particular, seem to have been completely wiped from the game.
As Kotaku points out, this first instance of someone noticing this disappearance was in a Reddit thread started on June 17th, followed by others on Twitter noting the absence. Another Reddit user claims that police cars will fall from a junk rift spawned in Creative, but they turn into regular cars when they fall. Many speculate that this sudden absence has to do with George Floyd’s death, which has sparked protests against police brutality and systemic racism nationwide and in games like The Sims 4.
However, there are plenty of other beliefs floating around about the lack of police cars. Another major suggestion is that if/when cars become drivable, Epic Games wouldn’t want players to be able to shoot each other from police cars because of how controversial it might be. Epic Games hasn’t said if it’s related to the George Floyd protests, but it’s possible that, like Twitch, it is worried about how players might use police-related things in the game.
Unsurprisingly, there are players who aren’t happy about this change. Some have expressed frustration that the lack of police cars will affect their creative maps and other game modes. Others have brought out the “keep your politics out of my video games” argument, while others still were unhappy over what they see as an anti-cop statement. Again, many of the vehicles on the map are gone due to the flooding, so the cop cars might show up again. We can expect the floodwaters to recede sometime around August 27th.
Fortnite is available now on Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
