New consumables may be coming to Fortnite in the weeks ahead, if leakers are to be believed. Fortnite players are likely familiar with the Flopper consumable, which can be caught with a fishing rod. Floppers were introduced in patch 11.0 back in 2019, but they’ve grown more thematically important on Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 3’s flooded island. It’s only fitting that Epic wants to expand on the concept of Floppers, which is exactly what it sounds like the studio is doing.
According to Twitter user intercelluar, confirmed by Fortnite dataminer HypeX, a variety of thematic Floppers are going to be introduced to the game. intercelluar says that Epic will be introducing Flopper types including fire, hop, jelly, shield, and thermal to the game. It’s even possible that more will be added to the game later.
While intercelluar doesn’t provide a date for when the new Floppers will be introduced to Fortnite, HypeX is able to confirm that they already exist in-game. The Floppers are associated with Fortnite’s fishing spots, but Epic has them disabled so they cannot be caught. They say this is because Epic is likely still testing the before enabling them.
But the Floppers aren’t likely to remain disabled for long. The flooded Fortnite map this season makes it the perfect opportunity to put out something like the new Floppers. Maybe Epic has another mid-season event in mind before the Floppers become available or maybe it really is just a testing issue. Either way, Fortnite players can likely look forward to the coming weeks for these new fishies.
Going by the Floppers’ names, they likely each provide a unique buff depending on which is eaten. If a basic Flopper simply heals, a Shield Flopper perhaps boosts a player’s shield. A Thermal Flopper maybe makes the player immune to heat, or perhaps the opposite. And then a Hop Flopper could increase a player’s leap. Exactly what they do isn’t clear, but the possibilities are there for Epic to have fun with.
One last interesting detail about these new Floppers is that intercelluar says they’re probably inspired by a piece of fanart. Artist TheHauntedLegend posted a fun concept piece in which 44 different Flopper fish were drawn. They weren’t themed after powerups, though. They’re each just a fun theme, like a clownfish flopper, a demon flopper, a tomatofish flopper, and so on. Hopefully, Epic will give TheHauntedLegend some credit and maybe add some of their creations to the game.
Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
