After The Device event put the finishing touches on Season 2, Fortnite Season 3 has arrived. Subtitled Splash Down, this latest season for the Epic Games battle royale will feature a few surprises and some previously leaked additions.
The biggest reveal from Fortnite Season 3 is the Aquaman skin. This would have been a bigger announcement for Epic Games and Fortnite, but unfortunately data mines and leaks spoiled the surprise ahead of time. Aquaman actor Jason Momoa even teased the Aquaman skin on Tuesday, putting almost all speculation to rest.
As with any new season of Fortnite Chapter 2, the map has introduced some new changes. Following the events of The Device, parts of the battle royale map are now covered in water, which will add a new dynamic to the gameplay. Prior to Chapter 2, Fortnite players might have been frustrated by the introduction of more water-covered areas, but thanks to the addition of swimming it’s not a big deal.
The Fortnite Season 3 trailer shows off some of the new landmarks, which all have a water theme. The map gives off a lot of Waterworld vibes with makeshift floating towns and water as far as the eye can see.
Even with the swimming, Fortnite players don’t have to worry about the Season 3 map being completely overrun with water. In truth, only a portion of the map has been “flooded,” while other landmarks and areas remain the same. Still, the addition of water to the map will add some new dynamics to the battle royale gameplay.
The footage also reveals that there will be Marauders to contend with in Season 3, which sounds like the agents from Season 2. These AI-controlled NPCs will likely put up a small fight should players cross their path, but they will be seen more as a nuisance than a complete roadblock.
Epic Games also confirmed that players will be able to ride sharks in Fortnite Season 3, adding a new dimension to movement. Many of Fortnite’s vehicles have been randomly placed around the map, but this would be the first time that transportation seemingly moves on its own.
Of course, the initial selling point for Fortnite Season 3 will be the new Aquaman skin themed after the DCEU iteration of the character. Epic Games has built a strong relationship with a number of film and TV brands over the years and the addition of Aquaman continues that appeal. Best of all, the Aquaman skin is included with the Fortnite Season 3 Battle Pass.
Fortnite Season 3 starts today for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
