Not long from now, Season 5 of Fortnite will begin, and the myriad players of Epic Games’ multiplayer sandbox shooter are in eager anticipation as to what the developer has in mind for the next cycle of content. Equally exciting is the fact that just before the fifth season’s arrival, Epic is also announcing the Summer Skirmish series for the game, where the studio will be offering $8 million in prize money.
Epic Games will officially host the Fortnite Summer Skirmish series starting this weekend with a $250,000 Duos competition in which participants will be made up of “community creators” and “players who have demonstrated their competitive prowess.” The developer will run the event for about two months’ time, as the series will span across the course of eight weeks. Plus, on a week-to-week basis, Epic could potentially change the format and the competitors as well.
For those unaware, Epic Games previously stated that anyone would be able to participate in the first year of competitive Fortnite, but it says that “in order to jumpstart the competition, invitations for the inaugural Summer Skirmish matches have already been sent.” With this being the case, its highly likely that the event will include a lineup that features stellar up-and-coming players and various entertainers.
All things considered, some players might be disappointed to learn that the Fortnite Summer Skirmish is kicking off without Epic having first provided all fans with a permanent Competitive Mode that would let anyone take part and thus allow them to be eligible for such big events. Nevertheless, it makes sense to simply ensure that the first year of competitive Fortnite is stacked with those Epic deems to be skilled participants, for not only is there a lot of loot on the line, but also the studio will be guaranteed a solid viewership with established players and well known personalities participating.
Fortnite is available now for Nintendo Switch, iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
