Alongside a plethora of other changes in the Fortnite v7.30 update, developer Epic Games is adding a new type of healing item, the environmental campfire, to the battle royale game. Prior to this change, Cozy Campfires were an item players could throw down to heal up, but now, campfires can also be found in fixed locations around the map.

While they may be useful, they are likely to be points of interest with high traffic, so knowing how they work is key to using them successfully. Each campfire can only be used once per match, with the phrasing suggesting that this isn’t something that can be used by multiple players (beyond the immediate squad). Interacting with the Fortnite campfire will light it and heal everyone in the immediate area like a Cozy Campfire, healing nearby friendly players by 2 health per second for a total of 25 seconds.

Moreover, interacting with one of these campfires is required to unlock stage 3 of the Prisoner skin. For those not in the know, the special skin for the Snowfall Challenge is known as the Prisoner, with stage 2 unlocked by using the skin to get a key at Polar Peak. It’s been known for some time that campfires would be related to stage 3 but not exactly how, and now Fortnite players can know where to look in order to unlock this stage.

That said, knowing the rough whereabouts of these locations can be useful in the standard match as well, as they are a stable source of healing spread across the map pretty well. That said, it does seem the area between Lucky Landing and Dusty Divot is getting less love than the viking village or Wailing Woods. It does remain to be seen how heavily this affects Fortnite’s meta, but thus far, it seems like a welcomed change.

All things considered, many will likely be unlocking stage 3 of the Prisoner skin with the first chance they get. Not only has it proved to be popular, but many believe the prisoner will somehow be involved with season 8. Of course, that remains to be seen, but the end of season 7 is nigh, so we won’t have to wait much longer to find out.

Fortnite is out now in early access for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
