Well, so much for 11 Bit Studios’ next game being a little more lighthearted than Frostpunk. After promising a pivot to happier games, the developer’s latest teaser seems to be about as depressing as its previous titles.

“The wasteland covered by snow’s quilt seems quiet, calm, asleep as if the wind was its lullaby,” reads the description of the video teaser. “Yet, the crimson scars mark the battleground for precious things worth breaking up alliances over.”

There’s not much to say about the teaser other than there’s blood and oil-streaked snow leading up to what is almost certainly a kneeling, frozen corpse. So, yeah, lighthearted chuckles all around.

11 Bit Studios said way back in 2019 that their next game has a working title of “Project 8,” although given the time between now and then (as well as the complete lack of humor in the teaser), it’s entirely possible that Project 8 was scrapped in favor of Project 9, 10, or 11.

We’ll find out more about 11 Bit’s upcoming game on August 12.

11 Bit’s last game, Frostpunk, is an apocalyptic survival city builder where you play as the last remnants of humanity trying to survive a volcanic winter. A huge volcanic eruption has caused an extinction-level event, leading to mass crop failures at the end of the 19th century. Frostpunk is all about gathering survivors and rebuilding society, scavenging for coal, wood, steel, and food to keep everyone fed, sheltered, and warm.

Frostpunk was critically acclaimed when it was released back in 2018 on PC, where it sold 1.4 million copies in its first year. It’s since expanded to the PS4 and Xbox One, created a spinoff tabletop board game, and will soon arrive in mobile thanks to a partnership with Netease.

11 Bit’s August announcement will definitely be one to watch.
