The creators of This War of Mine have announced the Kickstarter launch date for its latest board game titled, Frostpunk. Based upon the video game of the same name, players are promised a faithful adaptation.

Polish developers, 11-bit studios were formed in September 2010 by former employees of CD Projekt and Metropolis. Best known for titles This War of Mine and Frostpunk, they have a history of creating titles suitable for both hardcore and casual gaming markets. This move into traditional gaming opens up their own IP to a new market of gamers hungry for unique and compelling experiences with rich lore to fall into.

Frostpunk originally debuted on PC in April 2018 and received Xbox One and PS4 editions 18 months later. The game is a cross between city-builder and survival and follows an alternative world history, loosely related to the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa. This sparked a global cooling event that saw temperatures drop. Thankfully for us, the event was not as tragic as the one in Frostpunk, which saw temperatures drop to devastating levels.

The game is set in 1886, in which a volcanic winter has befallen the earth. This is in part due to the eruptions of Krakatoa and Mount Tambora, but other elements are at play. The British authorities have built several installations in the coal-rich areas of the North. At the heart are the generators that keep the surrounding cities warm. Players take on the mantle of Captain and are responsible for the running and survival of the inhabitants.

Not much is known at the moment about how the video game mechanics will translate in the board game experience. However, there is an active Facebook group that was started by the team. Several screenshots of Tabletop Simulator running a digital version of the game have been posted, and from what we can tell, the game appears to feature Euro-centric gameplay using hex tiles similar to Catan. At the heart of the playfield, there is a 3D rendering of a generator with resource pieces placed on tiles.

Our guess is the game is further in development than they are letting on and that information is being drip-fed to fuel excitement and also get a feel as to how the mechanics will be welcomed. Regardless, we are excited about this game and hope that it breathes fresh life in this exciting world.
