It appears that Warhammer fans may be seeing an influx of new AAA Warhammer video game titles in the relatively near future, courtesy of Games Workshop. The company’s latest annual report announces its intention to produce new Warhammer games, revealing that the company is signing new development licenses every few months.
Games Workshop is the company behind the Warhammer tabletop miniature games and lore universes; clearly, it plans on expanding those universes exponentially in the coming years. At the time of its writing, the company’s report revealed that over 70 licenses had already been signed, with new ones to come every few months.
That’s not to say that the world is currently lacking in Warhammer titles; there are plenty of games on the market, but not necessarily of the quality that Games Workshop now appears to be seeking. As the report reads, the company’s current goal is AAA video games, and it is in the process of negotiating “many” licenses with multiple developers - Games Workshop also promised to update fans when those licensed titles are announced. “…We have 73 licenses and are signing new ones every 2-3 months,” the report states, indicating that multiple high-budget Warhammer video games could be announced in the near future.
Current results for a search on Warhammer games will reveal a long list on Steam alone, but those titles come from small studios and have mixed reviews; overall, they tend to be lower-budget productions. The Warhammer community has been wishing for games more along the lines of Warhammer 40,000 Darktide, revealed for the Xbox Series X Games Showcase, and they’re about to receive. There are also three cames coming from Focus Interactive, including two Warhammer 40k games and an Age of Sigmar game as well.
The Warhammer universe is actually split in two, the fantasy-themed Age of Sigmar and the sci-fi-themed Warhammer 40k, with Warhammer as a whole becoming more popular in recent years. The impetus for Games Workshop’s new initiative is clear: 2019/2020 has been its best financial year ever.
Hopefully, Games Workshop’s drive to produce AAA Warhammer titles will yield an increase in both the quantity and quality of games.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is scheduled to release in 2021 on PC and Xbox Series X.
