In the Animal Crossing franchise, villagers come prepackaged with their own unique personality, which consists of their own likes, dislikes, special catchphrases, and personality types. Each new entry in the series has added new villagers and made each resident’s personality just a little more immersive.
With New Horizons, villagers — especially the ones from previous games — aren’t just limited to activities in line with their base personalities and interests anyone. For example, what if Celia is a nature-loving villager with a Normal personality? She can still pump iron!
However, that doesn’t mean that their personalities don’t come into play, as one New Horizons player noticed. Twitter user NessCyanide realized that villagers lift weights at different speeds depending on their personalities and posted a video comparing how quickly several of their residents went through reps.
The video shows Bam, a blue Jock-type deer, and Gonzo, a Cranky koala, pumping iron. (Peppy villager Agent S is also there, but don’t mind him.) In the video, Gonzo is lifting weights at a noticeably slower pace than Bam. Moreover, his animation makes him appear more tired than Bam, and Bam can pump iron longer without expressing fatigue. In terms of personality, this makes sense: Jock villagers are all about working out, getting swole, and otherwise being as much of a Chad as Animal Crossing will allow. Meanwhile, Cranky villagers are a little less inclined to get regular exercise.
Unfortunately, NessCyanide couldn’t capture villagers with the Normal, Smug, or Peppy personality types lifting weights to see how they compare to Bam and Gonzo. It may be that every non-Jock villager uses the same emotes as Gonzo, or it could be that New Horizons has actually accounted for a sliding scale of weight-lifting competence based on personality.
It would be hilarious to find out that Peppy villagers can lift faster than Normal, Smug, and Cranky villagers. All that energy has to count for something, right? And we all know the only thing Raymond lifts is the New Horizons black market. While no one will be outpacing Jock villagers any time soon during an island-wide workout, it would be neat to see whether each personality type has its own rep speed.
