Dragon Age Inquisition followed up on the story of Dragon Age II (sort of), and it launched to some mixed reactions from its fanbase. Many have praised Dragon Age Inquisition for its open-world combat and exploration. However, many fans drew many parallels to the Witcher 3 and pointed out flaws with Inquisition system’s that made the game seem far more underwhelming.

Some fans, however, still delight in uncovering the various hidden character interactions. On Reddit, user Lethenza pointed out a small detail that showcased a dialogue exchange between Iron Bull and Solas that has them playing a verbal game of chess. The two characters have a back and forth shouting chess moves, and the movements mimic the exact moves of the famous Immortal Game.

The Immortal Game was a chess match between chess masters Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky in 1851. On the surface, this detail is a delightful reference to an exciting history tidbit. However, picking the Immortal Game is quite genius when we begin to draw parallels between the real-life chess masters and our in-game comrades.

Where this becomes impressive is the fact that Solas’ journey in Dragon Age Inquisition parallels Adolf Anderssen’s style of play during the Immortal Game. Adolf Anderssen makes history and wins his chess match through bold sacrifices, like giving up his queen, rooks, and bishops, to checkmate Kieseritzky. In Dragon Age, Solas had become the Dread Wolf, aka Fen’Harel, after losing loved ones, sacrificing relationships, and eventually, this pushes him to pursue his endeavors in leading an army. Solas is quite a complicated figure, but his sacrifices are what made him. Hopefully, in the next installment of the Dragon Age series, we can explore more of the Dread Wolf’s complicated persona.

For fans that still love to play Inquisition, the many criticisms do not stop them from finding joy in exploring a rich open world and interacting with deep characters. There was a lot of love put into Dragon Age Inquisition, and it has not gone unnoticed. While Dragon Age Inquisition has its fair share of details and references, this gaming detail that references a real-life event is extraordinary display of character writing.
