Dying Light found a way to make a game about zombies stand out when the genre has oversaturated markets for quite some time. From the open world, fun co-op adventures, to the freedom it gave players when fighting off hordes of the undead, the community fell in love with Dying Light. Support for the series has also been consistent, showing developers care for its loyal fanbase.
While the thought of jumping from rooftops to escape the undead army that always surrounds you seems a bit scary, Dying Light always finds excellent ways to balance camp within its horror. From goofy weapons to outlandish concepts, Dying Light avoids taking itself too seriously to focus on fun gameplay. In some instances, the references made throughout the game help break up the tense atmosphere and let players loosen up from tense encounters.
One Reddit user, evildeadjunkie - great film series please watch it, Sam Raimi is a king - found a coy little detail showcasing a bottle of lotion in a handwoven basket. For some, this is an odd detail that they’ll overlook. However, for many, this is a fun reference to Silence of The Lambs and Buffalo Bill’s famous line, “It Rubs the Lotion on its Skin or else it gets the hose again.”
Every comment in the thread flooded with users quoting the film and having fun remembering Buffalo Bill dangle the basket down the well. It sounds weird to be giddy about such a creepy scene, but the movie is a classic, so definitely watch it if you can. Only a few users seem to not get the reference, with some thinking it was a bottle of shampoo in a basket, and others just not having seen the film at all.
It’s these small details that always add a fun sense of charm to a game and reflect a deep love for the craft. It would be nice to see more film references throughout the game, especially considering the genre. Here’s hoping the sequel comes out soon, and players have more joy exploring a zombie apocalypse.
