You hear about Pluto?
The Last of Us 2 has seemingly taken the world by storm. Whether it be the many controversies or the ground breaking sales in the first week they manage to stay on the news front.
Seeing that The Last of Us takes place in the near future it only makes sense for some worldly details to hold true. One of those details is that Pluto is not identified as a planet in game.
During the museum portion of the game players will find themselves in the space area. Where many would find Pluto, next to Neptune, is painted over with stars. At least that’s what it seems like.
Many fans are outraged by the fact that the developers, Naughty Dog, would do such a thing. While some are offering explanations to said “downgrade” it manages to get under the skin of many who grew up with the planet.
So why is this important, and causing such an outrage? In game it isn’t clear if it was once there on that mural. Joel even mentions it in the previous game, but that’s because he grew up with that knowledge. The declassification of Pluto as a planet is an argument that will continue. Even though there are larger rocks than Pluto.
One Redditor went further into this detail to state that to the left of Mercury there is also a blank space. While the brain fungus infection began seven years after Pluto was downgraded to a dwarf planet. Following with a belief that Pluto was never there to begin with.
Another detail is the curvature of the wall and if Pluto was supposed to be there it would not match the mural. Since the rest of the planets are all following the same path, and then curve inwards.
The International Astronomical Union, IAU, downgraded the planet in 2006 to a dwarf planet. There is a strict, direct criteria for these masses to reach planet status. Not meeting the full requirements will classify the mass as a dwarf planet.
The criteria is:
-It is in orbit around the sun
-It has sufficient mass
-It has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit
While this could be a reach in whether or not Pluto was painted over it remains a neat detail that the developers added.
