There are a handful of obvious references to different superheroes throughout Marvel’s Spider-Man, but this one is a little more subtle.

Spider-Man has been making video game headlines for a lot of reasons this summer. Some good, some bad. The good news has revolved around the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Not a sequel to the first game on PS4, but a title that follows on from it. The bad news has centered on the web-slinger’s addition to the roster of Marvel’s Avengers.

The main issue gamers have with Spidey’s inclusion is it will only be taking place on the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game. Sony once again flaunting its ownership of Spider-Man’s screen rights in the worst possible way. It also throws a spanner in the works of different heroes joining Spidey in the universe created by Insomniac, something that was teased on numerous occasions during the first game.

The most obvious reference is the inclusion of Avengers Tower in New York. Spider-Man also references the superhero team, revealing that they are on the west coast at the time the game takes place. There’s another, much more subtle reference to one Avenger, in particular, during the second part of the game’s DLC, The City That Never Sleeps.

During one of the early missions in Turf Wars, Spider-Man is tasked with fending off enemies who are using stolen Sable equipment. Anyone who has played the game will know that equipment includes some pretty sturdy shields. Spidey has seen better though, as he sarcastically reveals while fighting off his foes. “You know, I know a guy with a way cooler shield,” the web-slinger jokes.

Spider-Man is, of course, making a reference to Captain America. We’re assuming no one has clued him in on the tragic events that unfolded in San Francisco on A-Day. We kid, of course, we know that, unfortunately, the two games take place in different universes. Square Enix has already confirmed its Spidey is completely separate from Insomniac’s. With plenty of heroes left to choose from, we wonder if Insomniac can assemble its own Avengers in the future?
