In SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, players get treated to a dank little surprise in the form of some famous SpongeBob memes – recreated by both SpongeBob himself and Patrick.

It’s clear that those behind Rehydrated – the remastered version of the original Battle for Bikini Bottom released way back in 2003 – wanted to make sure the SpongeBob franchise’s esteemed reputation of being a fertile source of memes was very much acknowledged.

In addition to a nod being made towards the famous “Squidward Dab” meme (a nondescript NPC near Mount Spork can be seen performing said dab at one point in the game), there are at least two more similarly well-loved memes that make sneaky appearances throughout the game.

If you’ve played the game yourself, you probably would have noticed that when you leave SpongeBob idle for a bit, he fires up a series of special animations. There’s a pretty broad range of said animations, depicting varying levels of cuteness, silliness, and overall charming SpongeBob-ness. But scattered throughout his repertoire of performances are two particular sequences that reference well-known SpongeBob memes.

First we have the Mocking SpongeBob meme, which features our yellow hero parading around in a chickeny fashion during an episode from the series. That’s because he apparently has an uncontrollable urge to cluck like a chicken upon coming into close proximity with plaid. As with so much SpongeBob imagery, it became an internet icon and still represents an ideal means of directing mockery towards worthy targets. In Rehydrated, we bear witness to the legendary meme in all its 3D animated glory.

Then there’s a tribute to the age-old Surprised Patrick meme originating from the 2004 SpongeBob Squarepants movie. Both SpongeBob and Patrick take on their respective shocked demeanors in Rehydrated, depending on who you’re playing as, when you leave them alone for a little while.
