As surprising as it sounds, The Witcher and Twilight have a lot in common. Both feature various incarnations of werewolves and vampires, tons of violence, and ridiculously good-looking characters who are also impossibly old. If Twilight featured more decapitations and nudity, and The Witcher had more whiny high school kids they’d practically be the same thing.
So even though their timelines are hundreds of years apart, a reference to the popular young adult novels inside one of CD Projekt Red’s Witcher titles isn’t as dumb as it might seem. Which is probably why it happened.
Hidden within The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a book titled Moribundia: The Vampire’s Last Likeness. Upon collecting it you can read a passage that reeks of Stephenie Meyer’s writing. You know, if she was born during medieval times. It recounts an emotional moment between characters named Isabella and Edward, so they’re not even making an attempt at being subtle about this reference. Isabella reveals that she is in love with a werewolf, and beyond that, is also pregnant with his child. Scandalous!
Since everyone knows that those riding on the Team Edward hype-train were on the right side of history, this means that someone on The Witcher 3’s writing team was inserting blatant fan fiction into the game. What a way to earn a paycheck. Also, does this mean that CD Projekt Red is/was on Team Jacob? Because that’s just silly. Obviously Edward’s pouty broodiness was much more desirable when compared to his clueless wolf-boy competition. Hopefully, this wasn’t the case as we have to assume that these developers had better taste than that.
Considering the world in which The Witcher takes place it’s not hard to believe that a series like Twilight would find popularity. Civilians are well aware of the existence of monsters and otherworldly creatures. So even though the average werewolf or vampire is more likely to gnaw your face off than treat you to a romantic dinner, there’s bound to a large portion of readers looking for some steamy supernatural action. Some may have even tried to pursue this fantasy and ended up being one of the many victims or corpses that Geralt has come across on his travels.
There’s bound to be another Witcher game sometime in the far distant future. When that day comes we can’t wait to see if any other hot YA novels end up getting an Easter egg. Maybe Ciri will end up being a big fan of The Hunger Games?
