Until Gears Tactics came along, there was a distinct lack of chainsaws in tactical strategy games. Thankfully, that issue has now been solved. But while PC fans have been able to indulge in some turn-based Locust slicing, Xbox owners have been eagerly waiting for their turn to get in on the action.
Well, fear not sadistic strategy fans, because Gears Tactics is heading to Microsoft’s little black gaming boxes. It will be available on both the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X, and it’ll be shinier and more full of content than ever before.
As announced today in this handy Youtube video, Gears Tactics is coming to both current and next-gen Xboxes this holiday season. It’ll also be arriving with brand new content as part of its console debut.
Jack, the friendly hovering robot that has assisted various Gears throughout the series, will now be a playable unit. It looks he’ll be able to brainwash Locust soldiers into fighting for the other side. This ability is called “HiJack,” because who doesn’t love a good pun? In addition to Jack will be new difficult enemies to fight and different kinds of high-caliber weaponry. Those who digitally pre-order the game or play it on Xbox Game Pass will also receive the Thrashball Cole Character Pack.
While Xbox One owners will be happy to finally have this game, early adopters of the Xbox Series X may be worried that it won’t be visually appealing enough on their new hardware. Those people can rest easy, because Gears Tactics has been optimized specifically to appease those who want the prettiest strategy game money can buy. It’ll be capable of running in 4K with a 60 FPS framerate on the Xbox Series X. Although, in an interesting omission, this trailer doesn’t mention anything about how it will run on the Xbox Series S.
Gears Tactics has been praised by most critics as an excellent strategy game. Our own Andrew Penney gave it a solid score in his review and it currently has a score of 80 on Metacritic. With some additional content and a spiffy next-gen upgrade, it’ll be perfect for Xbox owners looking for something that’s both cerebral and violent.
Gears Tactics will be released for the Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X on November 10, which coincidentally is the same day as Microsoft’s new consoles land on store shelves.
