Genshin Impact was an instant hit, with its expansive world, fast-paced combat, and unique character designs. That’s not all the game has to offer, though. Every few weeks, a new character comes out, and the developers regularly update the game to add new events, rewards, and story missions. There’s plenty of meaty content for fans of open-world games, action games, and anyone in between.

Beneath the vast and visually stunning world that the game offers, however, is a rich, lore-filled world history. The world of Genshin Impact feels alive with all its backstories, organizations, and creatures. It can be a bit intimidating to try and process it all at once. Here are a few things about the lore of Genshin Impact to get casual players started.

10 What Are Domains?

Domains play a key role in Genshin Impact’s gameplay, right from the beginning, and their importance doesn’t doesn’t dwindle as the game goes on. Domains are like temples in other adventure games, where puzzles have to be solved and groups of enemies must be fought in order to progress.

Through completing domain challenges, players can get the materials they need to invest in their favorite characters and weapons. Some domains give out materials for levelling up, and others offer artifacts to equip and enhance your stats.

9 What Do Hilichurls Do?

One of the first and most common enemies that players will encounter, the Hilichurls come in a variety of types, specializations, and elemental affinities, making no two encounters the same. Resembling goblins, Hilichurls are known to belong to one of three tribes: the Sleeper Tribe which loves napping, the Meaty Tribe which prays to have meat every day, and the Eclipse Tribe, a mysterious tribe that seems to revere the symbol of an eclipse.

Many citizens believe that Hilichurls are all dangerous and cannot communicate with intelligent species, but a few side-quests show that Hilichurls can be spoken with, and that they’re not all hostile.

8 What Is An Archon?

One of the first terms that new players may hear in Genshin Impact is the word “archon.” An archon is simply the word commonly used in game for a god. Venti, also known as Barbatos, for example, is called the Anemo Archon in the game, because he is the wind god.

In the past, before Genshin Impact’s story takes place, there were a lot of archons in Teyvat. However, due to changing circumstances, only seven remained relevant, after a war that deemed seven emerging victors.

7 Who Are The Seven?

The concept of the archon naturally leads into the question of who The Seven are, as this term is also tossed around early on in Genshin Impact. Essentially, The Seven is a term that encompasses seven Archons that ruled over the seven nations of Teyvat.

Each of The Seven held domain over a specific element, such as Anemo. Thousands of years before the start of the game, there was an Archon War from which seven archon victors emerged. Each victor’s element and guiding principle forms the basis for the way their nation is ruled.

6 The Knights Of Favonius

One of the first characters that players meet in Genshin Impact is Amber. She says she is part of the Knights of Favonius. The Knights of Favonius is an organization that was formed by the help of the Anemo Archon Barbatos himself, to protect the region of Mondstadt.

There is a hierarchy system among the knights, and this includes the positions of characters such as Jean, Amber, Kaeya, and Lisa. The leader of the knights is known as the Grand Master, and the rank directly below that is that of the captains. Kaeya, and the recently added character Albedo, for example, are both captains of the Knights.

5 Amber’s Role Among The Knights

Amber, a preppy and eager girl working for the Knights of Favonius, often introduces herself as Outrider Amber. A subdivision of the Knights, the Outriders were founded by none other than Amber’s grandfather. They were skilled archers and gliders, which explains Amber’s specialties in those areas.

The Outriders went obsolete when Amber’s grandfather disappeared. Eventually, she was the final remaining member of the Outriders. However, that doesn’t stop Amber from doing whatever she can to help the people of Mondstadt. She firmly believes in justice and is always ready to fight for what’s right.

4 Who Is Jean?

Jean’s role is that of the Acting Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius. The Acting Grand Master title means that she takes on the duties of Grand Master while they are unavailable. To be qualified for such a position means that Jean is very well respected and responsible, and this shows through the Mondstadt part of the story.

Jean is incredibly well liked by the citizens of Mondstadt. She works tirelessly to do whatever she needs so that Mondstadt can remain a safe and peaceful place for its people.

3 Kaeya And Diluc’s Relationship

Kaeya is one of the first characters that players meet, and he leaves quite an impression. He’s also a character that players can get for free by completing his domain quest. At the end of his domain, however, there’s a story scene where he exchanges words with the mysterious red haired man, Diluc, and players may wonder exactly what the relationship between these two is.

Diluc is the very wealthy and esteemed owner of the Dawn Winery, but he also happens to be Kaeya’s adoptive brother. The two were very close in the past, and Diluc was even working with the Knights. After Diluc’s father died due to what he believes is the Knights’ fault, Diluc’s perspectives began to shift and he left the Knights of Favonius to work alone.

2 Who Are The Liyue Qixing?

After playing through the Mondstadt part of the story, players are able to progress to new regions and explore further. Their adventures take them to the land of Liyue, where a different archon reigns: the Geo Archon, Rex Lapis.

Throughout this part of the story, the Liyue Qixing are mentioned often and they play a key role in the functioning of Liyue. They are seven merchant leaders who govern the region and are basically in charge. This includes characters such as Keqing and Ningguang, and they perform the Rite of Descension every year, in which Rex Lapis gives business trend predictions.

1 Who Are The Fatui?

The Fatui are a group that is commonly mentioned in both Mondstadt and Liyue, so it’s clear that they’re a key part in the development of the world of Genshin Impact. The Fatui are diplomats from the region of Snezhnaya, an icy, wintry land.

The Fatui are feared by the other nations due to their power and numbers, and are clearly an antagonistic force in Genshin Impact, as they seek to overpower and control the other nations. Their members include characters such as Childe, who players meet in the Liyue chapter of the game.
